Living Water

“Whoever drinks of the water that I give will never be thirsty again.”

One day, after a long journey, the man stopped to rest at a well. While he sat there, a woman came to get water. Normally, people like him did not talk to people like her, but he did. He asked her for a drink of water. At her surprise, she asked, "Why are you speaking to me?" He answered, "If you knew who you were speaking with, you would ask me, and I would give you living water." Of course, she didn't understand. "You don't have a bucket to draw water" she said. But he wasn't talking about water that you drink. He was speaking about something deeper—a kind of life that never runs dry. He was talking about the spirit of God. He then began to tell her things about her personal life that he would have no way of knowing. She immediately realized that this was no ordinary man. He was a prophet. So she told him about how her people have ways and places to worship that were different from his, but he told her that what really matters to God is that the people worship in spirit and in truth. She told him that she knows the messiah is coming. The man replied, "That's me." The woman was so amazed, she left her water jar and ran back into the town to tell the people. She said, "Come and see the man who told me everything about myself." Many of the people in that town believed in him because of her.

Thoughts to Consider

Could it be true that this man offers living water? Would he really meet us where we are?
